Job description
Job Purpose
To work closely with the Research Institutes and Schools to provide support in raising the reputation of research impact from the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow.
The main focus of this role will be to work proactively with key academic and professional service staff to identify opportunities for research impact, coordinating the creation of a College Impact Pipeline, and ensuring that impacts are investigated, tracked and clearly evidenced throughout the development lifecycle. To create a reportable database of impact stories, impact projects, and Research Excellence Framework (REF)-appropriate impact case studies that will be used to raise the profile of research impact, both internally and externally, and to support the College submission to REF or similar reporting.
To support the College to communicate its research excellence and wider impacts, providing ad hoc guidance and support to academic staff on research communications and knowledge exchange opportunities that engage the relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries, ensuring that strategically valuable research impact is promoted and accelerated.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To provide specialist advice and guidance on the development of impact arising from College research, including the development of impact plans within research applications; identification of funding support; identification and collection of evidence of impact; appropriate record keeping; and creation of audience-specific case studies.
2. To coordinate the creation and management of the College Impact Pipeline.
3. To work with researchers and professional services staff to increase the visibility of research outputs, College research excellence and their wider impacts, through identifying opportunities for non-academic dissemination and engagement with relevant stakeholders at all stages of the research process.
4. To support awareness and education of research impact, including one-to-one advice and the creation and delivery of training / workshops, to support colleagues to identify and progress impact opportunities, develop impact case studies and offer best practice advice and direct support to gather evidence.
5. To maintain a detailed knowledge of research impact within the HE sector, including policy development from UKRI and other major funders, and disseminate to College staff, as appropriate.
6. Maintain an overview of the progress of impact development plans, taking appropriate action to support, as required.
7. Be actively involved in appropriate Cross-College / University wide collaborative working to build networks and share best practice.
8. Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of systems and procedures to ensure continuous improvement in the performance of impact support. Investigate any issues arising, and identify those with wider implications, developing systems, processes, and procedures to ensure such issues are resolved.
9. Responsibility for coordinating the College REF-related impact activities, including the identification and delivery of impact case studies for future REF submissions, within the plans and timelines agreed.
10. Assisting with other projects and activities, as requested by the Dean of Research and Innovation; Director of Professional Services; Head of Innovation & Enterprise and other senior colleagues as appropriate.
11. Any other related duties, as required.

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1. Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in a discipline relevant to the College or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role
A2. Knowledge of the academic research environment and research impact agenda, including the impact assessment framework standardised through the REF

B1. A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of HEI organisational structures, policies and procedures

E1. Significant experience of working in a similar/related role in a higher education institution or similar.
E2. Experience of writing copy for a range of audiences, or experience of developing and writing Impact Case Studies for REF, or similar.
E3. Experience of writing about research and/or complex topics
E4. Experience of dealing with and communicating to a large number of staff from a variety of backgrounds and levels of seniority
E5. Experience of communicating effectively and confidently with senior staff
E6. Proven experience in collating, integrating, manipulating, analysing, and presenting data from a wide variety of sources.
E7. Experience of contributing significantly to the work of teams of people – including colleagues across a department and organisation to achieve short-term and long-term business goals to deadlines.
Desirable
F1. Experience in communicating complex data or concepts in a manner that is accessible to lay audiences
F2. Experience of working in Higher Education in a research promotion role, e.g., Marketing, Communications, Business Development, Knowledge Exchange
F3. Experience in organising meetings and/or other events including logistical arrangements, papers, communications
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.
This post is full time (1 FTE, 35 hours per week) and open ended. Please note, applications for part time post (0.8 FTE, 28 hours per week) will also be considered.
