Job description
We have an exciting opportunity for a Lecturer in Biology to contribute to an excellent student experience by delivering teaching, assessment and administration associated with undergraduate Life Science programmes and to undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching practice at course and institutional level.
You will primarily contribute to the teaching and support of undergraduate students studying Biology/Life Sciences courses in academic Years 1 and 2, supporting student learning during the transition into higher education is a therefore an important component of this role. You will also contribute to the provision of summer schools, to outreach activities and to any additional duties deemed appropriate by the Life Sciences management team.
The College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences is comprised of 8 Schools, with each School designed to enhance multidisciplinary approaches to tackle major national and global bioscience and biomedical challenges. There are 16 Life Sciences (BSc) degrees embracing the full breadth of modern life sciences research activity, taught across 6 Schools of the College.
Applications are invited from candidates who hold a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience in a relevant area of Life Sciences.
Job Purpose
The post holder will contribute to an excellent student experience by delivering teaching, assessment and administration associated with undergraduate Life Science programmes and to undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching practice at course and institutional level. You will primarily contribute to the teaching and support of undergraduate students studying Biology/Life Sciences courses in academic Years 1 and 2, supporting student learning during the transition into higher education is a therefore an important component of this role.
You will also contribute to the provision of summer schools, to outreach activities and to any additional duties deemed appropriate by the Life Sciences management team. This is a Post-doctoral role in Biology at MVLS College Services.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Make significant contributions to the teaching, assessment and administration with a focus on year 1 and 2 undergraduate biology courses and summer schools. This will involve student support sessions and laboratory leadership/delivery with the aim of promoting effective student learning and engagement.
2. Prepare, lead and supervise practical and tutorial classes advising students on the skills, methods and techniques they must acquire for each course, aligned to RSB accreditation requirements.
3. Develop effective teaching materials to ensure content and methods of delivery meet learning objectives for students with a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.
4. Contribute to the development and delivery of effective approaches to learning, teaching and assessment aligned to and informed by good pedagogic practice.
5. Participate in the effective delivery of assessment processes, using a variety of methods and techniques, and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
6. Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
7. Be an Advisor of Studies and support the pastoral care for students and provide guidance on the choice of courses and degree programmes.
8. Engage in continuous professional development as appropriate for the role.
9. Be involved with recruitment and orientation events as required.
10. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.
11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Associate Dean, Life Sciences Portfolio.

Essential
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience.
A2. Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding of a specific discipline within the Life Sciences with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning.
Desirable
B1. Knowledge of education-related quality assurance practices.
B2. Understanding of key aspects of good pedagogic practice.

C1. Evidence of effective organizational and administrative skills.
C2. Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to prepare clear and concise documents (such as course information documents or for scientific writing purposes).

D1. Evidence of a sympathetic approach in dealing with students’ problems, both academic and personal.

E1. Demonstrable teaching experience in a relevant area of Life Sciences.
E2. Proven ability to design, review or enhance learning, teaching and assessment and/or discipline-specific research programmes.
E3. Experience in teaching undergraduate laboratory classes.

F1. Contribution to the design, review and/or enhancement of course content or assessment.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.
