Job description

Job Purpose

 

To lead, manage and develop the Arts and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership (AHRC DTP) engagement activities in the consortium, including transition into the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Award Hub model (DLA), ensuring effective and impactful relationships, which deliver project requirements in line with SGSAH strategy. To maintain and develop collaboration across all the partnership universities, including budgetary control, operational management, supervision, and Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Scottish Funding Council (SFC) reporting on behalf of the consortium.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.  Student Recruitment and Management:

*    Communicate and collaborate with consortium partners to devise and implement procedures and strategies for student recruitment, development and training.

*    Manage robust provision of student administration services, including responsibility for effective student record systems.

*    Drive project lifecycles across SGSAH to ensure that policies and systems are in place to capture monitoring points for all AHRC DTP/DLA/SFC funded programmes.

*    Foster effective research communities and networks.

*    Manage programme of outreach activities to support SGSAH HEI partners and other Doctoral Training Partnerships/Doctoral Landscape Award Hubs.

 

2.  Partnerships: SGSAH Member HEIs across Scotland:

*    Lead SGSAH administration and manage communication and support for all AHRC/ SFC supported doctoral training events and researcher opportunities across Scotland.

*    Build upon current resources to develop and deliver supervisor training across the consortium and common procedures for annual review of supervisor performance.

*    Support strategic development of activities relating to student experience and cohort building across the consortium.

 

3.  Line Management, Recruitment and Networking:

*    Lead administrative processes for recruitment across SGSAH, liaise with colleagues as appropriate to produce job advertisements, distribute calls for interviews, request and collate candidate references etc.

*    Line management responsibility for administrative and relevant atypical staff, including performance management, development and training.

*    Community building across SGSAH member Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), fostering networking, sharing of best practice and development opportunities.

 

4.  Management of Information:

*    Develop and manage effective systems to drive project lifecycles including management of the project and its resources, establishment of robust delivery schedules and co-ordinating project delivery activities to meet project outcomes.

*    Produce and evaluate statistical information for areas of activity across the consortium for annual reporting to Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), including progression of the grant activities.

*    Devise and monitor Equality and Diversity metrics across student and staff recruitment across the consortium.

*    Build professional relationships to enable the collation of data and benchmarking with other consortiums across Scotland and the UK.

 

5.  SGSAH Governance Structures:

*    Management of resources for project teams including external stakeholders, providing support and direction; developing plans for the delivery of required work; monitoring progress and evaluation and initiating corrective action when required.

*    Be a core member of relevant committees to coordinate and liaise between them, ensuring consistency across strategic developments, and to coordinate the sharing of best practice amongst stakeholders.

*    Coordinate and manage working groups as necessary to develop policies and practices, reflect on activities, and make recommendations for improvements.

*    Act as a conduit between the SGSAH consortium and other groups and committees.

 

6.  Finance and compliance:

*    Apply professional expertise to advise on and implement strategies and procedures, such as working with SGSAH team and HEI partners to ensure flexible and responsive allocation of funds.

*    Support the development of strategic funding bids to AHRC/ SFC.

*    Manage extensive budgets, including DTP consortium and DLA Hub budgets, Research Training Support Grant, overseas fieldwork, visiting doctoral research trips and student and cohort development funds in line with financial regulations whilst adhering to funder regulations.

*    Assist with implementation and management of accurate, timely systems for effective financial monitoring of the SGSAH and DTP consortium budgets in collaboration with consortium partners and central administrative officers.

*    Approval of all expenditure associated with scholarships and the running of SGSAH.

*    Ensure compliance with contractual terms and conditions of SGSAH membership as well as all grants and assisting with grant reporting (such as collation of event information, securing contributions from co-applicants, budget allocation.)

*    Accountable for maintaining comprehensive record keeping for both internal and external audit purposes while adhering to security information procedures.

*    Risk mitigation and management.

 

7.  Health, Safety and Security:

*    Ensure compliance with legal responsibilities and that compliance is fully documented.

*    Play a leading role in promoting health, safety, and security at work for the welfare of staff, students and visitors, and the protection of University and personal property.

 

8.  Other reasonable duties as assigned by the Director of SGSAH/Head of Operations and Strategy.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications  

 

Essential:

A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)

 

Desirable:

B1 Knowledge and experience of Higher Education sector of sufficient depth to engage in meaningful discussion across institutions

B2 Good understanding of university degree regulations

B3 Understanding of sector-wide issues affecting arts and humanities

B4 Understanding and experience of process design, monitoring and improvement

Terms and Conditions

 

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.

 

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 12 months from the start date in the first instance.
