Job description
Job Purpose
This role will provide senior professional services support and will be responsible for leading on the delivery of the University of Glasgow’s flagship ‘Music in the University’ (MiU) programme; a part of the University of Glasgow’s programme of community and cultural events activity.
Alongside this, the role holder will contribute to the development of a business case and subsequent implementation of a broader University Arts & Culture Strategy and vision.
Establishing and developing relationships with other stakeholders, the role will lead the delivery of a range of strategic priorities and will work collaboratively across the wider University, using MiU and activities tied to the emerging Arts & Culture strategy to engage campus (staff and student), regional, alumni and global communities, enhancing the University’s reputation in cultural and civic spheres. A key priority will be to emphasise inclusivity.
The post is a University of Glasgow role but will work alongside the College of Arts & Humanities Community and Engagement team and other engagement professionals in the University.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Collaborating with key stakeholders in the University, as appropriate, to lead the development, delivery and promotion of a strategically determined non-curricular programme of music events, including high-profile events, appealing to a diverse range of communities and participants.
2. Leading on the the current and planned MiU programme, provision and activity and collaborating to support and enhance future provision as appropriate.
3. Influencing the development of music, and arts and culture more broadly, in activity relevant to the research, impact and external engagement across the University including inter-disciplinary and cross-college activity.
4. Collaborating on and contributing to the development of a University-wide Arts & Culture Strategy, led from the College of Arts & Humanities, but extending across the University and beyond.
5. Developing business cases for resources and capturing opportunities to support and foster the development of the Arts & Culture Strategy.
6. Leading on the delivery of a sustainable, resource-efficient approach to “Music in the University” (and Arts & Culture) planning and provision; drawing on best practice in event planning including the latest developments in audience engagement, accessibility and evaluation. This will include devising toolkits/guidance to support others in delivering related activity.
7. Collaborating with key internal stakeholders - including Colleges and Schools, Student Representatives Council (SRC), Queen Margaret Union (QMU) and GUU - to design, support and deliver community-building music (and, in due course, Arts & Culture)-related events and opportunities by and for student cohorts at all levels.
8. Enhancing the reputation of the University and its Colleges, actively contributing to student recruitment, including international student recruitment, the student experience and – through engaging students in events organization – enhancing student employability.
9. Promoting the potential wellbeing and community benefits of music-making for staff, students and the wider community.
10. Contributing to relevant internal and external committees, groups and forums; and liaising with role-holders to foster the development of a community of practice across the University.
11. As required, providing line management, mentoring or supervision of role holders supporting the delivery of events.
12. Being accountable for the efficient use of financial and physical resources and liaising on current and future needs as appropriate.
13. Any other duties commensurate with the grade and can be reasonably expected and are relevant to wider College and University strategic developments.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles.
Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2. A high level of knowledge and understanding of current issues and developments in arts administration, audience development, fund raising, music education at School and University level, arts and disability.
A3. A high level of knowledge and understanding of music-making culture, industry and organisations in Glasgow, Scotland, UK and international contexts.
A4. Knowledge and understanding of HE structures, practices and challenges.
Desirable:

E1. Demonstrable experience in music and arts administration.
E2. Project management experience.
E3. Experience of devising and/or using administrative systems and processes and of applying relevant IT systems to support systems and processes.
E4. Experience of managing and controlling budgets and resources.
E5. Experience of monitoring and evaluation approaches, including the measurement of event outcomes against planned objectives.
E6. Experience of artistic programming and/or curatorial practice.
E7. Relevant and broad experience of the organisation, administration and delivery of events.
E8. Experience of working with students, student groups, or organisations in a relevant capacity and ideally including experience of supervising or managing individuals or groups.
E9. Experience of successfully forming networks, collaborations and professional relationships.
E10. Experience of drafting successful funding applications.
Desirable:
F1. Experience of working within a Higher Education environment.
F2. Experience of cultivating relationships and collaborating with artists and/or arts organisations. and/or external communities around engagement plans or event design and delivery.
F3. Experience of personal engagement with music-making/music participation across various genres and contexts and a proven interest in a broad range of Arts & Culture activities.
F4. Experience of having led or conducted musical groups of any kind.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
