Job description

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Application Packaging Team lead the Application Packager will deliver application packaging and support as part of a team of three packaging specialists in the delivery of application packaging and support to the end user fleet.

 

As a member of the End User Services Team [EUC], the post holder contributes technical expertise to the management of the University's software portfolio across all platforms. The software packaging team, as a core component of the End User Computing team in Information Services forming the pipeline to analyse, package, deploy, report and maintain every software package required by users across the Universities diverse and extensive end user device fleet.

 

Supporting thousands of applications, across the end user fleet of 25000 devices, on both Mac and PC, both physical and virtual, local and cloud this role.

 

Utilising our extensive toolkit to deploy applications to our users (SCCM, inTune, JAMF, Azure Virtual Desktop) the post holder will play a key role in the delivery of these services to all of our users, on all of our campuses, UK and International.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Technical Software Packaging on the Microsoft Windows and/or Apple Mac platforms.

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out Software Packaging activities to agreed standards on some or all of the following platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows desktops managed by SCCM

  • Microsoft Windows desktops managed by InTune

  • Azure Virtual Desktops managed by SCCM

  • Apple Mac desktops managed by JAMF

  • Assist the Software Packaging Lead with design and implementation of the processes required to build and run an application packaging functioning.

  • Identify and input into continuous improvement activities on an ongoing basis.

 

2. The post holder supports the software packaging team lead in the maintenance of the application packaging toolkit stack, planning the upgrade of all related components in their workstack through to service evolution   The postholder will work internal and external with partners to ensure the maintenance of the production system is scheduled with GU stakeholders in mind,  then plan, test and manage the deployment of changes to the service, utilising resources from various College and IS teams to ensure business continuity during service evolution.

 

3. Key member of the team responsible for delivery of “same day” packaging SLA in maintenance of the Universities Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation for all environments.

 

4. Liaise with IT Services Helpdesk and/or directly with other IT professionals in IT Services or within colleges to provide expert 3rd level technical support for application installation of usage issues.  This requires not only good communication skills but also the ability to prioritise and project manage, frequently whilst operating under pressure.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications  

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree,  Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related roles supported by a broad based IT knowledge, with specialist knowledge of Microsoft operating systems (software installation, deployment and troubleshooting) OR Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles.

A2 Up to date broad-based IT knowledge, including specialist knowledge of Microsoft operating systems (software installation, deployment and troubleshooting) and Mac Operating Systems.

A3 Proven track record of operating in a large complex environment.

A4 Comprehensive technical knowledge of application packaging.

A5 Knowledge of IT Information Security for confidential data, both research/commercial and personal (e.g. Data Protection Act 2018), and the implications of security-by design in the IT service lifecycle and third part app integration.

A6 Understanding of disciplined change management processes.

A7 A level of understanding of the complete range of technologies that permits the post holder to analyse, design, build, test and deliver the complete end to end stack required to support the totality of these mac leveraged services. Including the definition of support processes and interfaces and the control of budgets to deliver within agreed budgetary limitations.

A8 The post holder will also require:

*          Sound knowledge of application packaging tools and processes

*          Good knowledge of JAMF and it’s supporting technologies

*          Working knowledge of Virtualisation technologies

*          Working knowledge of Intune and it’s support technologies

*          Knowledge of HTML

Skills

Essential:

C1 Ability to apply analytical insight to problems to support logical qualitative decision making and formulate and project manage solutions.

C2 Analyse the risk and impact of change and make appropriate recommendations to the management team.

C3 Ability in scripting languages AppleScript, PHP. Exposure to OSA.

C4 Ability to communicate /demystify complex technical concepts to non-technical colleagues at summary level both in person (one-to-one and by presentation) and through documentation.

C5 Advanced skills in a broad range of EUC service delivery components to be able to deliver the unique service attributes using minimum additional complexity.

C6 Ability to prioritise workload to deliver to tight deadlines and manage competing demands from various stakeholders often at short notice, in recognition of the mission critical nature of these services the Universities core business. An understanding of the delicate balance between service evolution and unwelcome change in the most challenging of delivery environments for staff (delivering lectures).

C7 Highly effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to challenge assumptions and practices, both internally technically and externally operationally.

 

Experience 

Essential:

E1 Significant experience of packaging and deploying software in complex environments for desktop systems based on Windows, Macos or iOS within a large complex organisation, using enterprise toolkits.

E2 Experience of working with and influencing at various levels across the organisation including senior management.

E3 Experience of providing guidance and support to customers on the most suitable solution.

E4 Broad experience of configuring applications to mitigate security vulnerabilities.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience of deploying or support server technologies.

F2 Experience of working with Linux.

F3 Experience with other languages and Microsoft operating systems e.g.

  • Powershell, Intune, SCCM

  • SQL

  • Javascript

  • Apple MacOS

  • Apple iOS

  • Linux

  • Android

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum.

 

This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and open ended. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.
