Job description

Job Purpose

 

The post holder will provide support, advice, and guidance to researchers to identify sources of funding, nurture opportunities and support the preparation of grant applications to all relevant funders. They will provide training to individuals and groups, regarding funders, funding streams, and requirements to strengthen the quality and potential for success of securing awards.

 

As the first point of contact for one or more schools they will build and maintain a strong understanding of the research undertaken across the College. Working with colleagues in the College, across the University and externally they will identify and help establish new interdisciplinary partnerships.

 

The post holder will support internal funding calls, selection processes, and events. They will take the lead on specific initiatives to deliver a Professional Research Support service to the College of Science and Engineering.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.  Responsible for identifying new sources of funding in line with the College Research strategy, communicating opportunities and proactively working with researchers to pursue research funding opportunities.

2.  Establish an understanding of the priorities, interests and budgets of potential funders and match and map these to research opportunities in the College.

3.  Provide specialist advice and guidance on potential funding sources during project feasibility and provide input and feedback to proposals during the development phase to ensure funder criteria are addressed.

4.  Support processes for internal funding calls and Demand Managed schemes ensuring Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are considered.

5.  Provide one-to-one support, guidance and feedback for PDRAs developing Research Fellowship proposals.

6.  Work with the Dean of Research, College Management Team, College academics, and the Overseas team in University Services to identify and agree priority sources of funding to support the development of the College Research.

7.  Plan and lead on the organisation of events within the College and across Colleges relating to funder opportunities, including visits, seminars, Principal Investigator briefings for specific funding opportunities, etc.

8.  Provide support for networking and collaboration activities.

9.  Develop and proactively enhance key business relationships within the College, (including, other Colleges, University Services and Impact and Industrial Engagement) to learn and share from best practice elsewhere and to eliminate any internal barriers to manage risk, enhance collegiality and multi-disciplinary collaborations.

10.  Deliver initiatives on behalf of the College and represent the College, as required, in appropriate cross-University fora.

11.  Liaise with the Contracts team regarding contract development, including intellectual property ownership, risk assessment and Trusted Research.

12.  Provide guidance and/or signposting to researchers to identify and support impact and innovation development.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. OR Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent, (including professional accreditation, with relevant formal training) and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

A2 Understanding of academic environment including the complex mix of pressures, constraints, motivations and risk/reward positions of academic staff, schools, the college and the institution.

A3 Understanding of the dynamics of the government, research councils, EU and industrial research funding market worldwide, particularly funding regimes.

A4 Awareness of types of support provided by all relevant funders.

A5 Awareness of contractual, legal and financial matters in relation to research contracts, etc.

 

Desirable:

B1 Knowledge and understanding of working in interdisciplinary research environments.

B2 Awareness of EDI considerations in research.

Terms and Conditions

 

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum.

 

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term until 6 November 2025 in the first instance.
