Job description

Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Teacher Education (Primary specialism) 

 

The School of Education invites applications for the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Teacher Education on the Research and Teaching track (R&T). 

 

Job Purpose 

The successful candidate will contribute to and lead innovative, research-led teaching, with a particular focus on teacher education. This post would suit a qualified candidate with a focus in the preparation of primary and secondary teachers. It may also suit a dual primary or secondary qualified candidate whose background is in teacher education, teacher led research, or continuous professional learning and would predominantly be part of the teaching team in Initial Teacher Education, including our five-year Masters degree in Education with Primary Teaching Qualification and Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

 

The successful candidate will make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard, high quality teaching, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. They will build and sustain in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Working collaboratively and across disciplines, undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy.

2. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact especially but not exclusively in teacher education.

3. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange, which develop and sustain support for research in education in innovative ways and recognised excellence for the University.

4. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality course/programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams (beyond subject/school level).

5. Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities.

6. Develop a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to support and enhance course/programme delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment within campus based, blended and online provision.

7. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.

8. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the School’s research agenda, with particular respect to teacher education, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.

9. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University.

10. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to complete within agreed timelines. Contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.

11. Engage in professional development activities as appropriate to support your future career.

12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience 

 

Qualifications 

Essential: 

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or equivalent, in Education.

A2 Eligible for GTCS registration (to be confirmed prior to application) in Primary sector or dual qualified.

A3 Established (Grade 8) or recognised (Grade 9) reputation in research and teaching, including a research profile in teacher education which matches or complements existing activities of the School

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential: 

C1: Established (Grade 8) or sustained (Grade 9) track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF).

C2: Established (Grade 8) or sustained (Grade 9) track record of applying for and securing external funding as primary investigator or key contributor from UKRI, EU or other prestigious funders.

C3: Ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas in education, to a wide variety of audiences to promote understanding.

C4: Proven ability (Grade 8) or substantial track record (Grade 9) of developing and devising teaching programmes, techniques and methods in teacher education at undergraduate/postgraduate level.

C5: Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues as commensurate with grade sought. For appointment at Grade 9, applicants should also demonstrate a track record of supervising postgraduate research students to completion.

C6: Track record of leadership in an academic context, including course leadership (Grade 8) and additionally programme leadership (Grade 9).

C7 Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the School. For appointment at Grade 9, applicants should also demonstrate a thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership.

 

For appointment at Grade 9 in addition to above:

C8: Proven ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of large-scale research and teaching activities, with particular reference to teacher education.

C9: Excellent leadership skills commensurate with the demands of the role of senior lecturer.

C10: Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.

 

Desirable: 

D1 Minimum of three years successful teaching experience in a primary or secondary school.

D2 Knowledge of socially just teaching practices.

D3 Experience collaborating with school personnel within diverse schools.

D4 Instructing Initial Teacher Education courses.

D5 Experience supervising students during school placements.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8/9,  £49,250 - £56,921 / £58,596 - £65,814 per annum

 

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended.
