The School of Critical Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Postcolonial or Indigenous Literature.
Applications are invited from candidates with an appropriate record of academic achievement in either Postcolonial or Indigenous Literature. We are looking for a candidate who will complement our existing strengths across teaching and research, and develop this area for our subject of English Literature. Outstanding publications are more important to us than the applicant’s specific period focus; we are, in fact, especially interested in innovative scholars whose research-led teaching rethinks the curriculum, potentially crossing traditional period boundaries, challenging generic classifications, or developing new methodologies.
The postholder will make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School and College through leading and contributing to research of an international standard, to high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in securing research funding, and in offering academic administration within the subject of English Literature and across the School and College of Arts and Humanities. In its research, the School fosters impactful connections with collaborators across Glasgow and beyond, and English Literature colleagues work actively with local partners towards public engagement with their teaching and research. The English Literature team works closely with School colleagues across its other subject areas of English Language and Linguistics, Theology and Religious Studies, Scottish Literature and our new area of Global Communications.
We especially welcome applications from candidates with a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in English Literature or a related discipline. Candidates should have an established reputation in research through an impressive publication profile, and significant experience teaching and supervising both core modules and specialist topics within the subject area of English Literature, in a higher education context.
Job Purpose
To undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, contribute to learning and teaching on agreed programmes and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.
For appointment at Grade 8:
To develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of international standard and contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by delivering, organising and reviewing agreed teaching, assessment and administration processes to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Critical Studies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop and progress individual/joint research projects of international standard in the subject area with the support of a mentor, as required.
2. Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading journals for dissemination as appropriate, identifying potential sources and contributing to funding applications as an individual or team member.
3. Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.
4. Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the subject area in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course co-ordinator for one or more courses.
5. Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
6. Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
7. Contribute to the development of theory and practice in the subject area.
8. Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.
9. Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.
10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
12. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.
For appointment at Grade 8:
13. Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project managing research activities, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Securing external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area.
14. Develop an expert reputation in the field by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate undertaking
knowledge exchange activities.
15. Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College. Establishing and leading research collaborations with appropriate
individuals and groups within the University, including multi-disciplinary links, and developing external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure
that research activities are at the forefront of the field.
16. Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the subject area.
17. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and
timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
18. Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and
assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
19. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based
learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
20. Develop effective working relationships with students and early career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in
partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
21. To supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students.

Knowledge/ Qualifications
Essential for Grades 7 and 8:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience in a similar or related role
A2 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area
A3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector/external (e.g. commercial) awareness
A4 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area
For appointment at Grade 8:
A5 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area.
A6 Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate
A7 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline to develop research and teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support

C1 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity
C2 Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives

C4 Effective organisation skills to manage time and prioritise as appropriate research, teaching and administrative responsibilities

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and open ended.
