Job description
Job Purpose
To make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through contributing and providing academic leadership and support in Orthodontics. You will play a leading role in the delivery of high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in Orthodontics. You will actively participate in supporting the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry and engage and build effective relationships with all key stakeholders and additionally undertake a leadership role as required.
Applicants will be expected to perform the duties of an Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Undertake a leading role in the design and delivery of a range of teaching, assessment and feedback activities in Orthodontics, in an environment that promotes scholarly learning for both undergraduate and taught postgraduate students, participating actively and in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This may include delivery of seminars, lectures, clinical and pre-clinical teaching. On average, there are 90 undergraduate students per year.
2. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, ensuring that the quality of educational opportunities is available to undergraduate students, continually enhancing and recognising the needs of a diverse student cohort and taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes.
3. Undertake academic management and lead on the ongoing development and review of the undergraduate curricula.
4. Responsible for the supervision of undergraduate, PGT and PGR student research and undergraduate elective projects to ensure their effective development and assist with difficulties (e.g., learning support/problems).
5. Provide and create effective networks and arrangements to ensure timely and appropriate feedback to students is presented to support learning.
6. Actively engage in scholarship relevant to the delivery of dental education and disseminate outcomes appropriately.
7. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality teaching, administration, setting and monitoring standards across the academic department and wider School.
8. To undertake clinical duties as an Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics, as agreed in annual joint University/ NHS job planning. These are outlined below.
9. Undertake undergraduate teaching activity at outreach centre's and hospitals located outwith the Dental School & Hospital if required.
10. Act as project leader on major research projects (educational, scientific, subject specific or clinical) as appropriate to the level of the post.
For Appointment at Professorial level:
11. We expect all the above duties to be performed with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to collaboration, research or scholarship & teaching in relation to support and enhancement of the school’s profile both nationally and internationally.
12. Take a leading role across the School/College in relation to strategic learning and teaching initiatives.
13. Represent the School/College/University at significant external events.
These tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply a number of major tasks that the appointee may be reasonably expected to perform.
Main NHS Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To lead and contribute to all aspects of the clinical activity of the Department of Orthodontics.
2. Perform duties at other hospitals and clinics as required.
3. To contribute to the patient referral vetting process.
4. Whilst there are no out of hours on call commitment, there is a duty consultant service during working hours and the postholder will contribute to this rota.
5. To contribute and support the active clinical governance programme of quality improvement projects, clinical audit, protocol development and supervision of staff in training and specialty dentists undertaking such projects. This also includes working within the clinical policy framework of NHS GGC.
6. Manage the clinical administration related to service delivery utilising existing administrative support and systems and engaging with the active development of modern processes for the service under the NHS GGC Digital Strategy.
7. Co-operate with the existing consultant team with regards to planned leave in order to ensure continuity and delivery of the expected clinical service and teaching level across the year, annualised where necessary.
8. Actively integrate with colleagues as a team to deliver the clinical service and reporting to the Clinical Lead in Orthodontics on clinical matters.
9. Play a role in training junior staff including foundation trainees and specialist trainees (both NHS and academic) mainly in Orthodontics but may include specialties with whom we have a working relationship for patient management e.g. Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Radiology.
10. There is an expectation that the individual will work together with NHS and University staff to facilitate and take part in clinical trials and clinically related research as opportunities arise.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD or MD] or equivalent in related discipline.
A2. Registrable qualification with the General Dental Council and must be fully registered at the time of post commencement.
A3. Eligible for inclusion on the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics and must be included on the specialist list by the time of post commencement.
A4. Successful completion of an SAC approved 3-year pre CCST training programme in Orthodontics, or equivalent.
A5. Successful completion of an SAC approved, 2 years minimum, training programme in a Fixed Term training appointment (FTTA) in Orthodontics (post CCST training), or within 6 months of completion of such training, or equivalent.
A6. Hold, working towards, or be willing to work towards a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification
For appointment at Professorial level:
A7. Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of future direction of research and scholarship issues, both nationally and internationally
Desirable:
B1. Fellowship in Dental Surgery or MFDS from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges, or equivalent.

C1. Proven ability to deliver research-informed teaching.

C3. Good IT skills.
C4. Ability to motivate staff and provide strong academic leadership.

Experience
Essential:
E1. Significant experience of delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in Orthodontics
E2. Ability to evidence dissemination of and outputs/publications from research or learning, teaching & scholarship (Knowledge Exchange).
E3. Track record of successfully securing research and/or scholarship funding/ grants/activities as appropriate as appropriate
E4. Experience of successful supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of postgraduate taught/research students in subject area.
E5. Experience in administration of dental teaching programmes
E6. Experience of management processes in an academic environment
E7. Proven ability and experience of leadership and management of staff in an academic and clinical environment
E8. Proven ability to engage and establish collaborative working arrangements with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.
E9. Recognised expertise in subject discipline/specialism to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.
For Appointment at Professorial level:
E10. Extensive experience of teaching and supervision of postgraduate students.
E11. Evidence to forge new and effective collaborations with external stakeholders (e.g. industry and company partners)
E12. Significant leadership participation at conferences, committees or groups nationally and internationally.
E13. Proven track record of developing impact related to research or learning, teaching and scholarship.
E14. Evidence of Esteem indicators such as invited lectures, committee membership, working groups or prizes.
E15. A thorough understanding and track record in contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.
Desirable
F1. Evidence of establishing collaborative working arrangements (SL).
F2. Experience of supervising postgraduate taught / research students (SL).
Terms and Conditions
An honorary consultant contract will be applied for from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with an associated salary from £107,144 – £142,369 per annum on the New Consultant Contract (NCC) Scotland. Further payments may be made by the NHS for clinical activity e.g. a clinical EPA, Discretionary Points, Merit Award and/or Availability Supplement, if eligible.
This post is full time and open ended.
