Job Purpose
As the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Advisor within the College of Social Sciences, provide professional support and advice specifically in support of the College’s equality, diversity and inclusion agenda which includes a commitment to the achievement and maintenance of Athena SWAN accreditation across the College, along with university wide action plans.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Work with colleagues across the College and the University’s Equality and Diversity Unit (EDU) to develop and embed EDI activity that will shape our culture, address challenges and secure delivery against the College’s equality, diversity and inclusion agenda for both staff and students.
Collate all current Athena SWAN, and other EDI-related action plans across the College and wider University identifying key themes/workstreams of activity, challenges, opportunities, and areas of good practice.
Attend Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) group meetings and other associated meetings to provide advice and guidance on good practice (internal and external) supporting the review and delivery of School action plans.
Create proposals for cross College activities following engagement with School EDI groups to determine priorities and assess options, co-creating a thematic College EDI action plan. Define implementation plans that align, enable and/or complement ongoing organisational programmes and activities such as the Planning for the Future Strategy.
Contribute to the development and delivery of EDI-related training in partnership with EDU, OD and HR Business Partner colleagues.
Manage all communications with stakeholders in a professional, sensitive and timely manner to ensure buy in and to manage expectations around timings and outcomes.
Work closely with School EDI groups, People and Organisational Development (POD), elected student representatives and other colleagues to address emerging challenges in the College and for specific groups of staff and students.
Prepare reports for and provide administrative support to the College EDI Committee, organising meetings, circulating papers and updating the College website. Contribute to the organisation and delivery of cross College events in support of Athena SWAN and other equality activities such as those relating to disability and race.
Contribute to the success of the POD team by sharing knowledge, specifically developing awareness of equality matters in all its dimensions, as well as supporting and assisting colleagues.
Work closely with the EDU to understand the Athena SWAN data requirements and appropriate sources of data both within and outwith the University, undertaking analyses and producing narrative and numerical reports, graphs and charts and/or working closely with the College’s Data Analyst to provide these as required.
Be future focused on both impacts of changes in law and keeping up to date with university EDI action plans, ensuring the College is at the forefront of building an inclusive culture.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2 Good knowledge of equalities issues and relevant legislation.
A3 Well developed and up to date knowledge of MS Office packages, especially Excel.
Desirable
B1 CIPD Associate Member.
B2 Educated to at least degree level.
B3 Demonstrable knowledge of equalities best practice and initiatives in academia.
Skills
Essential
C1 Excellent organisational and co-ordinating skills, with the ability to cope under pressure while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
C2 Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to confidently persuade and articulate sometimes complex information in an accessible way.
C3 Self-motivated and able to take the initiative.
C4 Strong interpersonal skills, able to build trusted work relationships quickly.
C5 Diplomatic and discrete approach when dealing with sensitive and difficult issues, together with a good understanding of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) requirements when dealing with people data.
C6 Ability to work in partnership with academic and professional services staff, as well as elected student representatives.
C7 Ability to co-create and deliver presentations and training materials.
C8 Numerate with experience of data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation.
C9 Ability to produce written reports and explain statistical information/trends with clarity and precision.
C10 Good research skills, able to present findings in a clear, concise and credible way.
C11 Highly computer literate and skilled in the use of Excel and Word.
Experience
Essential
E1 Sufficient relevant practical experience in a similar or related role(s) to successfully undertake the main duties associated with this post.
E2 Experience of report writing, progress reporting and creating presentations in a project support or coordination role.
E3 Experience of using statistical and data analysis tools and techniques.
Desirable
F1 Experience of working on culture change projects.
F2 Understanding of the Athena Swan Charter.
F3 Experience of working in the HE sector.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £33,232 - £36,924 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
