Job description
Job Purpose
The post holder will join the School of Infection and Immunity and will provide senior operational support to laboratory users, including Principal Investigators, Researchers and Students. The post holder will be responsible for daily operational aspects of CL3 facilities in Sir Graeme Davies Building (SGDB), liaising with CL3 facility users and building managers and technicians to ensure daily operations are organised in an efficient and effective manner.
Operating within strict regulations, the post holder will provide specialist and bio-safety expertise in the management of the facility maintenance and will deliver training requirements for users of the CL3 facilities. The post holder will support the regulatory and operational responsibilities required at CL3, contribute to health and safety working groups and will work with the Building and Technical Managers to support the overall health and safety within the Sir Graeme Davies Building (SGDB).
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Ensure adherence to all health and safety duties as outlined in the University of Glasgow Biosafety Management Arrangements and support Building and Technical Managers within SGDB.
2. Support CL3 facilities within SGDB, co-ordinating training requirements for all CL3 users including delivering specialist technical and compliance training. Ensure training records are monitored, maintained and reviewed regularly and report outcomes to CL3 Management Group.
3. Monitor compliance related to in-house safety critical checks, maintenance, and housekeeping, ensuring findings are reported to Building and Technical Managers in a timely and accurate manner.
4. Troubleshoot complex technical problems, escalating issues as appropriate.
5. Liaise with CL3 users and Building and Technical Managers to co-ordinate the purchase of consumables and equipment.
6. Manage preventative maintenance contracts for CL3 facilities in SGDB.
7. Write and review the code of practice for the facility - in consultation with CL3 Management Group or Building and Technical Managers, where appropriate. The post holder will contribute to reviewing and writing of standard operating procedures for all CL3 facilities as a member of the CL3 Management Group
8. Ensure that all work conducted in the facilities are covered by risk assessments that have met the relevant local and statutory approvals.
9. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with set requirements, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to Containment Level 3.
10. Maintain databases and records, producing technical and progress reports which identify trends or defects in operating procedures and draft proposals for future action.
11. Provide out of hours emergency response and support Building and Technical Managers to develop and review business continuity procedures.
12. Liaise in a timely manner with colleagues in MVLS Estates, Facilities, and specialised contractors to plan an effective bi-annual preventive maintenance schedule for CL3 facilities in SGDB.
13. Provide CL3 Deputy Manager with training as and when required.
14. Keep up to date with developments in relevant enhanced biocontainment areas within the broader discipline to ensure contribution to School goals is optimised.
15. Enhance the SGDB CL3 operational profile and reputation by contributing to Health and Safety working groups and operational groups related to Hazard Group 3 work.
16. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Building and Technical Managers or HoS/HoPS.

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. SCQF level 8, (SVQ level 4, Higher Level Diploma), or equivalent in a scientific related discipline, and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s), OR ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
A2. Significant in-depth technical knowledge.
Desirable:
B1 SCQF level 9 (BSc Degree or equivalent) in a relevant scientific related discipline.
B2. Qualification in a relevant Health and Safety discipline.
B3. A working knowledge of university policies and procedures.
Skills
Essential:
C1. Excellent teamworking and proven people management skills.
C2. Ability to multi-task and prioritise to ensure that safe and efficient operating levels are maintained.
C3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
C4. Excellent organisational/coordination skills encompassing liaison with different stakeholders to manage schedules.
C5. Proven IT skills and ability to create and manage record keeping databases.
C6. An understanding of the operational needs in a complex and high containment research environment.
Experience
Essential:
E1. Proven training delivery and project management experience.
E2. Significant relevant technical experience in handling agents in high containment.
E3. Previous experience of technical leadership or laboratory management in a research group.
E4. Experience of ensuring compliance with all health, safety and environmental standards.
E5. Experience of writing technical reports with clear recommendations for a diverse audience.
Desirable:
F1. Experience of management duties at CL3.
F2. Experience of working within a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.
Additional Details:
In line with the CL3 Code of Practice, this role requires candidates to declare non-immunocompromise status. If candidates are unable to confirm this status, then a personal risk assessment will be undertaken before a formal employment contract is issued.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and open ended.
