Job description

Job Purpose

This role offers an outstanding opportunity to contribute to a major new, multi-institution programme of research examining the intersection of health and justice issues in Scotland, as part of a project team involving three Universities (Glasgow, Strathclyde and Edinburgh Napier). The role will focus on contributing to a deeper understanding of community experiences of health and justice, working with community partners to produce knowledge that seeks to address inequalities and promote better outcomes. You will bring skills in secondary data analysis and qualitative data-collection, alongside experience of community engagement.

 

The position offers the successful candidate a chance to shape this important research agenda whilst benefitting from career development opportunities available through the School of Social & Political Sciences, Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research, and the wider programme of work with the Chief Scientists Office of the Scottish Government. The funding is for a 0.6FTE post over two years, from 1st May 2025. However, we are open to exploring alternative configurations (e.g. a 0.8FTE post over a shorter period, or a 0.5FTE post over a longer period).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Perform the following activities in conjunction with the Principal Investigator (PI) as appropriate:

 

1.      Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research in accordance with the project objectives including qualitative data-collection and quantitative data analysis.

 

2.      Survey the research literature and environment and contribute to the drafting of relevant evidence/literature reviews.

 

3. Conduct primary research to support the project, including the identification, collation and analysis of relevant secondary data-sets

 

4. Write up research findings/outcomes in an accessible way to facilitate community engagement.

 

5. Work collaboratively with project partners to support and empower communities involved in the study.

 

6. Contribute to the completion of  stakeholder interviews  with a cross-section of key professionals working in justice and health services

 

7. Present work effectively to a range of academic and non-academic audiences, including at international and national conferences, seminars, colloquia and workshops.

 

8. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the project and wider community.

 

9. Take a leading role in organising and managing team/group meetings and activities to ensure the effective running of the project.

 

10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and School, including budgets/expenditure.

 

11. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

 

12. Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post as agreed with the PI and Head of School

 

13.   To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan - Inspiring People – Changing the World.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential :

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) with at least 2 years’ post-doctoral experience in a similar or related role(s), or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience.

A2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in areas relevant to the field of research

A3 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in specialist subject and of research methods and techniques to work within the subject area.

 

Desirable :

B1 Knowledge of project-specific data sources

B2 Knowledge of specialist IT software as appropriate

 

Skills

Essential :

C1 Ability to analyse and organise resources in order to manage time and workload effectively.

C2 Research creativity and strong cross-discipline collaborative ability as appropriate.

C3 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity, including public presentations.

 

Experience

Essential :

E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience including relevant methodological experience

E2 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.

E3 Experience of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of literature, design and analysis of research data and drafting of papers.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum pro rata.

 

This post is part-time (21 hours per week), and open ended with funding available for up to 24 months in the first instance.
