Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to the research project, Strategies to Strengthen European Linguistic Capital in a Globalised World (MultiLX), working with Professor Bernadette O'Rourke. This project is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe scheme. The successful candidate will contribute primarily to the Galician strand of the project, examining the linguistic practices of young people in the context of language revitalisation and multilingualism, as part of the Languaging in Europe work package, led by Professor O’Rourke.

 

The role involves direct involvement in data collection, analysis, and synthesis of findings from the Galician ethnographic case study which will be undertaken in the Autonomous Community of Galicia in North West Spain.  The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow. The appointee will contribute to research outputs, help organise research events, and collaborate with international teams to support the broader objectives of the project. They will be based within the Language and Society Research Cluster in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Glasgow and will also be part of the larger research network Language and Society in Scotland (LASS).

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and research strategy, specifically in relation to the Galician case study.

2. Document research output, including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate, with a focus on the Galician context.

3. Contribute to the formulation and submission of high-quality research publications related to the Galician case study, as well as broader research outputs associated with the Languaging in Europe work package.

4. Establish and maintain a strong research profile and reputation within the University of Glasgow and the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, including developing a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality.

5. Present work at international and national conferences, internal and external seminars, colloquia, and workshops to enhance the research profile of the University of Glasgow and the MultiLX project.

6. Identify potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding for future research on topics related to language revitalisation and multilingualism, particularly in the context of Galician.

7. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group, school, university, and wider community, including partner research organisations.

8. Play a key role in organising and supporting research events, including the Language Policy Impact Assembly, a forum for language policymakers and academic researchers to discuss inclusive multilingual spaces in Europe.

9. Support the supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced project team members, helping them to develop professionally.

10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and school, including managing budgets and expenditure.

11. Contribute to teaching activities and associated administrative tasks as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with the Principal Investigator.

12. Stay up to date with current research in the field, particularly related to language revitalisation, multilingualism, and the sociolinguistic context in Galicia.

13. Engage in personal, professional, and career development to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with the desired career trajectory.

14. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School

15. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University Strategy.

 

Knowledge/Qualifications 

 

Essential:

A1 A PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12) or equivalent in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, or a related field, with at least 2 years’ post-doctoral experience in a similar or related role.

A2 Knowledge of research methods used in ethnography and participatory research.

A3 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions in the areas of language revitalisation, multilingualism, and sociolinguistics and related fields.

A4 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

 

Desirable:

B1 Familiarity with research funding applications and securing external grants.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Proficiency in Galician, with a good understanding of its sociolinguistic context.

C2 Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce high-quality academic papers and reports in English.

C3 Proven ability to work effectively as part of an international research team.

C4 Demonstrated ability to manage research projects, including coordinating activities, tracking progress, and meeting deadlines.

C5 A commitment to open research practices, including sharing data and collaborating with diverse research teams. 

C6 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

C7 Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative in identifying research objectives and strategies.

 

Desirable:

D1 Proficiency in additional European languages.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1 Experience in data collection, including fieldwork, audio recording, transcription, and the use of digital and documentary material.

E2 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality publications and conferences.

E3 Experience in making a leading contribution to academic activities, particularly in the areas of sociolinguistics, language revitalisation, or multilingualism.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience in arts-based or film-based research methods.

F2 Prior experience with participatory and collaborative research methodologies.
