Job description

The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship) to contribute to (and where appropriate to lead on) the planning, delivery and administration of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in Biomedical Science subjects on professional courses as required by the School and more widely within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS). The School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing is one of eight Schools within the College of MVLS at the University of Glasgow. The School is renowned for pioneering teaching methods and superb facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate study. It is one of the largest and most prestigious Undergraduate Medical Schools in Europe and is leading the UK with the most important innovations in the teaching of medicine, a unique undergraduate curriculum that utilizes problem-based learning techniques.

 

Job Purpose

To contribute to (and where appropriate to lead on) the planning, delivery and administration of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in Biomedical Science subjects on professional courses as required by the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and more widely within MVLS; and to engage in scholarly activities which inform and support the role.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1. To lead on planning, delivery, assessment and academic administration of the Drugs Disposition course (MSc Clinical Pharmacology).

2. To plan, deliver and assess content appropriate to the development of generic (transferable and intellectual) and discipline-specific student skills on the BSc (Med Sci) Clinical Medicine intercalated degree programme.

3. To deliver lectures, small-group and practical teaching in biomedical sciences to undergraduate medical, dental and nursing students.

4. To participate in student assessment processes, as necessary, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.

5. To identify and respond to student needs within own area of responsibility, in a timely and effective manner. This may include a role as an Adviser of Studies.

6. To contribute to course/programme development in response to student feedback, national surveys, internal and external QA etc; including providing input at relevant meetings.

7. To engage in scholarly activities to inform and support the role, maintaining discipline-specific and pedagogical expertise, undertaking appropriate CPD, participating in debate within the discipline and/or the curriculum, and/or sharing expertise.

8. Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services team, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

9. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

10. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School.

11. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s internal profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing the World.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1.  Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a related discipline and/or teaching experience.  (e.g. physiology, neurosciences, pharmacology).

A2. Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field/discipline with the ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students. to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.

 

Desirable:

B1.  Have / be willing to work towards a PGCert in Academic Practice for teaching in higher education, or equivalent.

B2.  Knowledge of general research methodologies and transferable scientific skills.

B3.  Knowledge of study design, drug development and clinical trials processes.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1.  Excellent IT skills, including use of standard Office packages; utilisation of VLE software; use of tools for generation of multimedia / blended learning content (e.g Camtasia, Articulate Storyline, etc). C2.  Excellent written, oral and presentation communication skills and the ability to adapt communication style to suit the audience.

C3.  Excellent oral communication and presentation skills. C4.  Ability to work independently, setting own priorities and targets whilst being able to -ordinate/schedule activities.

C5.  Ability to work collaboratively and interact with key internal and external stakeholders (e.g., administrative/secretarial staff, academics and NHS Staff) as appropriate. C6.  Ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and so inspire learning.

C7.  Ability to provide pastoral support for students.

 

Experience

 

Essential: 

E1.  Sufficient experience of delivering a variety of approaches to teaching in a higher education environment, including evidence of substantial experience in the design and delivery of teaching.

E2.  Experience of laboratory techniques in disciplines relevant to the role (e.g., physiology / pharmacology / biochemistry / molecular biology).

E3.  Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.

 

Desirable:

F1.  Experience of grading student performance under specific codes of assessment.

F2.  Supervision of student projects.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum.

 

This post is full time and fixed term until 30th June 2025.
