Job description
The School of Law is looking to appoint a suitably qualified early-career academic to a fixed-term, three-year Lectureship in Legal Theory and the Philosophy of Law, starting from 1st September 2025.
This position is to cover Professor George Pavlakos while he is on leave, funded by a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship. The post-holder will be expected to develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of international standard and contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by delivering, organising and reviewing agreed teaching, assessment and administration processes to enhance learning and teaching in the School of Law.
We welcome applications from candidates with a strong record in the research interests of the grant holder and, more broadly, those of the Glasgow Legal Theory research group.
The successful candidate will join the Glasgow Legal Theory Group, a leading community of legal theory in the UK and internationally. The group has strong interdisciplinary links with the department of philosophy and together they have established the Glasgow Law and Philosophy Network.
The post will offer many opportunities to engage in research-led teaching and assume a central role in our signature Joint Honours degree in Law & Philosophy.
Job Purpose
To contribute to learning and teaching on agreed programmes, to undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, and to undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the Legal Theory subject area in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course co-ordinator for one or more courses.
2. Contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
3. Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
4. Develop and progress individual/joint research projects of international standard in Legal Theory and the Philosophy of Law with the support of a mentor, as required.
5. Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading journals for dissemination as appropriate, identifying potential sources and contributing to funding applications as an individual or team member.
6. Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.
7. Contribute to the development of theory and practice in the subject area.
8. Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development
9. Take on administrative or management roles within the subject area/School as assigned by the Head of School.
10. Engage in professional development as appropriate.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] in the area of Legal Theory and the Philosophy of Law including candidates in the final stages of their work towards a PhD or equivalent professional experience in a similar or related role.
A2: Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in Legal Theory and the Philosophy of Law.
A3: Emerging national/international research profile in Legal Theory and the Philosophy of Law.
Desirable:
B1: Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in Legal Theory and the Philosophy of Law, and a willingness to teach in this area.
B2: An understanding of how academic work might lead to impact outside academia.
Skills
Essential:
C1: Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.
C2: Ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.
C3: Ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector/external (e.g. commercial) awareness.
C4: Ability to work on own initiative to contribute to the research and teaching activities within the subject area and wider School environment. C5: Effective organisation skills to manage time and prioritise as appropriate research, teaching and administrative responsibilities.
Experience
Essential:
E1: Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.
E2: Developing track record of research outputs in Legal Theory and the Philosophy of Law compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum pro rata.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 3-years.
