Job description

The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine is seeking to recruit a dynamic and motivated clinician to join our Small Animal Medicine team. We welcome applications from candidates who hold an ECVIM/ACVIM diploma or have completed an approved residency training programme. In addition to clinical activities, the post offers a significant element of ‘off clinics’ time for research and scholarship. The role will also involve the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, interns and residents.

 

The successful candidate will be joining a friendly and supportive multidisciplinary team within our award-winning state-of-the-art Small Animal Hospital. The hospital is based on the beautiful Garscube estate, 10 minutes’ drive from the vibrant “West End” of Glasgow and less than one hour from Loch Lomond. Our facilities include on-site 1.5T MRI, CT, C-arm fluoroscopy, a range of Olympus and KarlStorz endoscopes, a linear accelerator and radio-iodine unit. We have a dedicated well-equipped ICU and excellent in-house laboratory. Our ‘One Hospital’ team ethos ensures exceptional clinical care can be delivered to our patients, and supports the continual professional development of our vets, nurses and support staff. The ability to work well with others in a collegial team atmosphere is essential.

 

Job Purpose

To deliver an efficient and effective small animal medicine service by providing expertise and clinical activity in the Small Animal Hospital. To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, clinical scholars and to undertake clinical research/scholarship contributing to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

1. To provide a high-quality small animal medicine service and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners that will consequently maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support commercial, teaching and research activities.

2. To support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.

3. To contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.

4. To support the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of the clinical scholars, by supervision of clinical duties and research projects, with a view to their successful completion of appropriate Board examinations.

5. To participate in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to the emergency and critical care specialty at national and international level as appropriate.

6. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the speciality and the RCVS.

7. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.

 

Teaching:

8. To engage in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders.

9. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

10. To engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, (using a variety of methods and techniques) and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

 

Clinical Research/Scholarship:

11. To collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine of an external reputation and develop a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed clinical journals and/or textbooks.

12. To attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences within the discipline.

 

Administration:

13. To develop material to promote the small animal medicine service, both at conferences and electronically.

14. To undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division.

15. To contribute to the performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with university strategy.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.

A2 Postgraduate clinical qualification in small animal internal medicine (European or American - DipECVIM/ACVIM) or eligibility to take qualifying diploma examination.

 

For appointment at Grade 8:

A3 Diploma in veterinary small animal internal medicine.

 

Note: Candidates who have completed a recognised residency training programme and are Board-eligible would be appointed at Grade 7 and will be promoted to Grade 8 immediately upon passing the Board exams.  Candidates with suitable relevant experience will be considered for appointment at Grade 7.

 

Desirable: 

B1 PhD (or other evidence of research training).

B2 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or equivalent.

 

Skills

 

Essential 

C1 Competence across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.

C2 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C3 A high standard of communication skills, both oral and written.

C4 Ability to provide specialist level veterinary care to patients in the small animal hospital.

C5 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

 

For appointment at Grade 8:

C6 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.

C7 Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to provide leadership.

 

Desirable

D1 Leadership of clinical team or teaching team.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1 Experience in referral-level small animal medicine.

E2 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.

 

For appointment at Grade 8:

E3 A track record of clinical research publications

 

Desirable:

F1 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical research.

F2 An established reputation as a specialist in internal medicine.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7/8, £40,497 - £45,413/£49,559 - £57,422 per annum, plus an additional generous market and OOH supplement, plus employer pension contribution.

 

This post is full time and open ended, however part time work will be considered.
