Job description

The School of Health & Wellbeing has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Lecturer in Public Health. This is a fixed term (up to 4 years or up until six months after obtaining CCT, whichever is soonest). The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate level of Specialty Registrar and would usually enter the West of Scotland Public Health Training Programme. You must already have a national training number at the time of taking up the post and you will be expected to have successfully passed the Faculty of Public Health Diplomate (Part A) exam.

The post will be based within the School of Health and Wellbeing in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) of the University of Glasgow, but for the purposes of public health training, rotation to health boards, local authorities and other organisations where public health activities are conducted may be required. Research may also be undertaken on other sites.

Whilst public health training will need to be completed during the Lectureship to ensure you successfully complete your certificate of completion of training (CCT), this post provides an exceptional opportunity for combined public health and academic training. It is anticipated that 60% of time will be spent on public health training and 40% on academic training, with the latter largely focused on research activity.

The post allows you to combine first class public health training with research training in the world class academic environment of the University of Glasgow. The School of Health and Wellbeing has a strong focus on College Futures priorities including Health Inequalities and Planetary Health, with particular expertise in epidemiology, natural experiment studies and simulation modelling studies.

Job Purpose

The academic aim of the lectureship would be to allow research development to support intermediate fellowship applications by the end of the lectureship and eventual growth to an independent academic career.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Research

The appointee will have demonstrated capability to conduct research in an area relevant to existing interests in the School of Health and Wellbeing. The appointee will be expected to:

*  Develop a programme of research under supervision of senior investigators in the School of Health and Wellbeing, in a subject area related to Health Inequalities, Planetary Health or another existing area of strength within the School.

*  Plan, design and implement projects with collaborators as appropriate; and to contribute to and submit grant applications and publications in high quality journals.

*  Contribute to the safe and efficient functioning of research facilities.

There are extensive facilities for research within the School of Health and Wellbeing and related Schools and Institutes within the University of Glasgow.  Information on groups and facilities can be found at https://www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/mvls/.

Academic support will be available during all annual research and training assessments to ensure that there is adequate balance between academic and clinical training. In addition to annual reviews of clinical progress, there will be reviews of academic progress within the School.

2.Teaching

The anticipation is that protected non-clinical time will be predominantly used for research. This post is not suitable for trainees wishing to develop a predominantly teaching or educational portfolio. However, it is expected that the Lecturer will contribute to delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities. These might include:

*  Teaching of public health, epidemiology and other vocational training activities, including seminars and tutorials.

*  Teaching or supervision within Postgraduate taught or research courses within the School of Health and Wellbeing, particularly the Masters in Public Health programme.

*   The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing teaching commitment within the School of Health and Wellbeing.

3.Administrative Duties

The Lecturer will contribute to administrative duties related to research and teaching as directed by their supervisor.

4.Clinical Duties

Clinical duties will be arranged following discussion with the relevant Training Programme Director in Public Health. The purpose of a Clinical Lectureship is to ensure that candidates acquire a CCT alongside academic training: appropriate clinical training opportunities will be arranged to ensure that this can occur within the duration of the Lectureship.

Public health training will be offered in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board and specialist training opportunities are available within the region including within Public Health Scotland, local government and Scottish Government. Clinical academic training will be the focus of the post with a 60:40 split between clinical and academic activity. The allocation of research and clinical time is flexible and various patterns of working are possible to suit differing research and clinical requirements. Applications will be welcome from trainees who are working less than full time, and the job plan will be adapted to suit such trainees.
